By W. Bentrim
Panasonic SC-HTB70 Sound BarThis sound bar has more heft than the Phillips that I replaced. The Phillips had a stand alone subwoofer which did not produce any better base tones than this Panasonic. The setup was not difficult but that isn't due to the documentation provided by Panasonic. Their little "manual" jumped helter skelter from topic to topic.I did not like the fact that all commands beyond the obvious involve "hold this key for 4 seconds while simultaneously holding this key down" type of controls. That is cumbersome at best. The sound is adequate. It is definitely better than the sound provided by my Toshiba 40" LCD TV but that is not a sterling recommendation as the sound from the Toshiba is just dreadful.I do not get a noticeable sub-woofer impact as I get on my surround sound system on a different unit. The remote is tiny which seems to be normal with the sound bars. Luckily the main unit does have some side buttons that allow manual use as the remote is so small it may get lost in the shuffle.I am pleased that I was able to program the standard Comcast Remote to turn the sound bar off, on and change the volume. You still need to have the Panasonic remote handy for changing source or sound type. However it will be convenient to just leave it on standard and use a single remote. The IR pass through works fine but the manual said it would only work with Panasonic televisions. You need the IR pass through because if you put any of the three styles of feet included with the sound bar on it, you block the TV remote sensor. If you don't use either of the non-flat feet, the sound bar sits with its LED light depicting modes facing the ceiling. You will probably want to use the IR pass through. My big beef with all of these people is why they don't include the optical cable to hook up to the TV. Optical audio cables are available at Amazon for under six bucks. Come on vendors, include the cable or at least be up front and clearly state that an optical cable is needed for the best sound experience.Lastly they do include both wall brackets and three types of feet. I would be happier with one less foot selection and an included optical audio cable. To summarize, this is an adequate sound bar. The Bluetooth connection will increase its value to many users. My initial assessment was 3 stars but then the unit stopped working after 3 days. I called Panasonic and they had me unplug the unit and replug it in and it started working again. The tech told me it is a firmware issue that they are working on. He had no time frame for the fix. The current solution is to unplug and plug in each time it fails. I frankly don't find that much of a solution and thus have downgraded the product to one star.

By Jed Shlackman
This Panasonic 2.1 channel soundbar is a quality home theater sound option. It has a built-in subwoofer and multiple settings for how it projects sound, both in terms of how you place and angle the speaker and in how the speaker generates sound. There is actually a sensor for the angle which lights up a different color depending on the angle it's positioned at. For movies and dramas the 3D sound simulation setting is a nice effect, though not as good as a full 3D effect of a multispeaker home theater. This speaker is designed to be used with a TV in approximately the 40-60 inch range - it has both a digital audio connection input and the left/right RCA type audio connection input (you can connect a stereo or DVD/Blu-Ray player to it) and it offers wireless reception of Bluetooth audio signals when you place the bluetooth device close to the speaker. It uses the 2.4 ghz frequency band so there can be interference with other wireless devices such as routers. It is also recommended to keep it in a ventilated space, not enclosed in a cabinet. There are accessories to mount it on a table or a wall, a remote control (that uses a lithium button battery) and an IR blaster to use in case there's an issue with it interfering with your TV remote's IR signal. Coordinating the sound control with a TV is something you'll have to test out - you may have to turn the volume down on your TV if using the soundbar doesn't disable the TV speakers, though I didn't encounter that issue myself.I found this easy to set up, though if you run into any problem be sure to read the manual/instructions. The sound quality is a big improvement over the built-in sound in most flat screen TVs, and the soundbar is a good option if you don't want a more extensive home theater setup. One thing that I felt could have been included was a digital audio cable to connect to a TV since this is marketed as being for use with TVs. This unit uses a bit of energy even when turned off, so it is suggested to unplug it when not in use. Panasonic puts in a disclaimer that there can be issues with Bluetooth and that the security of a Bluetooth connection can't be guaranteed.I like this speaker, though I would encourage anyone who gets it to fully read the manual when setting it up... there's more to this than some other types of speaker systems and you may have to troubleshoot some issues, especially with Bluetooth signals and IR remote signals.

By Z. Freeman
I was oddly intimidated by this soundbar before I tried to install it. The process turned out to be much simpler than I expected. It literally just involves hooking the audio cable up to your sound source (whether that's your tv, set top box or dvd player) and then plugging it in. However there are two problems that make this not quite as simple as it should be:1. No audio cables are included with the product. I know that audio cables are cheap (and if you're like me you have an extra lying around) but their cheapness is actually more reason to include one in the box. You do have the second option of using an optical digital audio cable to connect the soundbar straight to the tv, but this cable is not included either.2. The power cord that plugs into the wall is much too short. Unless you plan to have this sitting right next to a plug, you'll probably need an extension cord. Now neither of these are deal-breakers, they're just things to keep in mind.Overall, the sound quality is impressive and MUCH better than what comes out of my tv's speakers. The 3D effect that the system promotes, though can be a bit tricky. With sound effects it sounds great and truly adds a level of reality to whatever you're watching, but with dialogue the delay is a hair too long and can sometimes (not always) sound like an echo rather than an amplification. There are six different sound settings (Standard, Stadium, Music, Cinema, News and Stereo) and they give slight differences that are pretty self-evident by their titles.Overall, I like this thing: it looks nice, it's easy to set up, it gives out great sound, and it's also simple to sync up with Bluetooth and play music from my iPhone.
