Product Description
Movies and TV shows look their best on high-definition, flat-panel TVs. Unfortunately, the speakers that are traditionally found in these screens are small and deliver lackluster sound that hardly matches up to their breathtaking video. Thankfully, the fix is simple, and you don't need much space at all. The JBL Cinema SB100 is an easy-to-use, two-channel sound bar that features dual 3-1/2-inch (89-millimeter) premium cone woofers, two 1-1/2-Inch (38-millimeter) dome tweeters and a built-in 60-watt amplifier. It also features HARMAN Display Surround, which uses proprietary technology to create a room-filling, 3D soundstage from only two channels. Being a plug-and-play solution, the SB100 is easy to set up and it's designed to complement any flat-panel TVs that are 27-Inch (686 millimeter) and larger. For those who want an affordable and easy-to-use solution that ups the ante on their TV's miniscule, built-in speakers, the JBL Cinema SB100 is hard to beat.

I compared this sound bar side-by-side with a Sony HT-CT150 3D Sound Bar System, a slightly more expensive theater-in-a-box offering from Sony. Even without a subwoofer or any ability to chage the EQ, this bar sounded better, with a clearer high end and less muddy bottom. This was true for various types of television -- HD, standard, movies, series, news and sports, even though the Sony offers preset EQs for all these different types of media (but sounds good only on the "news" setting, no matter the input).The bar couldn't be simpler to set up - just plug the supplied optical cable into your cable/satellite box and the supplied power cord into the wall and you're good to go. A word of warning, however - the supplied cords are really short, especially the optical cable. If the box isn't right next to the t.v. you might need a longer optical cable, and you might need an extension cord for the power cable if your outlet is to the right of the t.v. or not close by, since the slot for the power cord forces it to go sharply to the left.The sound bar has two settings on the back to optimize sound whether it's wall-mounted or set on a table in front of the t.v., and there are buttons on the remote and the bar for mock surround sound and to boost the bass. Both produce a moderate change in sound which is more noticeable with music and sound effects than with speech.You can connect the sound bar if you'd like to a subwoofer, although neither a subwoofer nor a cable is supplied. Personally, I don't think it needs one for a small room, but it's nice to have the option.I also own a JBL SB 300 Soundbar and 150-Watt Subwoofer, which has superior sound but costs more than twice as much and has a fairly clunky looking wired sub-woofer. It's worth the extra money, in my opinion, if you can afford it, but the SB100 is more than adequate for a small room and a major improvement over the speakers included, if at all, with most t.v. sets.The bar itself is not terribly attractive, but it makes up for it by having quite good sound without the need for a subwoofer. It also has a fabulous credit-card sized remote, which is great for decluttering the bedside table, although also somewhat easy to lose track of.All in all I'm pleasantly surprised by just how good this sounds and plan on using it instead of the Sony since I don't need any of the Sony's bells and whistles (such as HDMI pass-through and 3D sound).If you're looking for a low-cost option to the speakers included in your t.v., this is a great choice.

I moved a lot of televisions around my house. As a result I put an older Mitsubishi LT-46149 46-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV with Integrated Sound Projector into the bedroom. In its day it was clearly top of the line, but now the sound as compared with my new 55 inch Samsung seems a bit tinny.My guess is that using the JBL as a subwoofer puts me in the minority. The soundbar is normally easy to set up but the old reliable Mitsubishi has a flaw. It does not have an optical input. Thus I was left to installing the soundbar on the subwoofer connection. To my amazement it worked. Suddenly the room is filled with deep, rich, luxuriant audio.Would this work in a bigger room? To some extent I think it would. However it has only 30w output and for most 60w is the minimum. Would it be better as the primary sound system. Again, I think it would.Rather than having to return the soundbar, I ended up with a great result.

The most important aspect of an add-on speaker system to an existing home entertainment center is the addition of more/better sound output, which this soundbar certainly does. I have reviewed speaker systems before, and I can say that the sound output from the JBL Cinema SB100 Soundbar is indeed satisfying.The bass from the soundbar is nice, and deeply felt. The surround-sound mimicking is decent, and the general sound output is much nicer than what we were getting from the TV alone.The only major bummer about the system, is that the remote that comes with it doesn't work very well (when it works at all). Even if you follow the instructions to program it to that is can learn to control your system and other devices, or if you try to teach your other remotes to talk to the unit -- it just doesn't seem to work. It will frequently "learn" what it is supposed to do, then "forget" it soon after. Another small note is the digital cable that comes with the unit was way too short (about 5~6') to allow us to mount the soundbar properly, so we had to go get a much longer one (about 12~15').Overall, the soundbar does its job. It adds to and increases the sound output from the TV nicely, and that is the only important part to mention about any speaker system.4 stars.
